Today, I came across a posting on John Chow’s blog about the top 10 mistakes bloggers make. I figured it would be a great exercise to go through the 10 mistakes and critic what I am doing against his list.

Blogging Mistake #1 - Not Updating

Well, I am new to this, but I am making the best effort to constantly add either posts, pages or new content since I launched my site a month ago.

Blogging Mistake #2 - Blogging for Money

Guilty. However, this blog serves many purposes for me. At the surface this blog appears to be about me trying to earn money towards my goal of retiring. But ultimately, this site is a learning tool for me. It has given me an outlet to improve my skills as a web designer technically, graphically and literally. It has pushed me to be better at what I do. If this site earns me only $1000, the blog is a success.

Blogging Mistake #3 - Rushing a Post

Spell check is my friend. Spell check is my friend. Spell check is my friend. Spell check is my friend. Spell check is my friend. Spell check is my friend. Spell check is my friend.

Blogging Mistake #4 - Not Being Personal

So far I feel I have been up front and personal about my experiences so far. It is just the beginning though…

Blogging Mistake #5 - Being a Copycat

As far as I know there is no one online that is attempting to use their blog or website as a means to earning money towards a retirement goal of $1 million dollars. So I think it is safe to say I am original. It will be interesting to see if any copy cat sites pop up.

Blogging Mistake #6 - Not Replying to Comments

As soon as I get a comment. I will be all over it!

Blogging Mistake #7 - Not Giving a Full Feed RSS

I already made the decision to offer Full Feed RSS to all 8 readers. Enjoy.

Blogging Mistake #8 - Not Reaching Out to Other Bloggers

This is a great point. Talking to other bloggers. Making comments and reaching out. While leaving links for track backs. Definitely a great idea!

Blogging Mistake #9 - Writing for Google Instead of People

It makes sense to write for people. Because the more people your site attracts, the higher your site ranking is with Google, Alexa and other site ranking tools. I do continuously try to add key words into my blog logs (cough… retiring … cough … planning…) but ultimately, I hope my site gets readers because they are interested in my progress towards my retirement goal.

Blogging Mistake #10 - Not Reading John Chow dot Com

It’s true. He is a great blogging resource and I check out his postings daily. Just be sure to read up on My Retirement Project dot com as well. ;)
