What? How Much for Those Pants?

As I am sure a lot of you have heard of this one recently. Roy Pearson, a lawyer in Washington, decided to sue a little Dry Cleaning store run by a Korean couple.
Has America come to a new low? I can’t help but to shake my head in disgust. How can someone in their right mind sue a small service business for $54 million!!!! Originally, it was for $67 million!
Based on D.C.’s consumer protection law, Pearson originally argued the three Chungs each owe him $1,500 for 12 violations multiplied by the 1,200 days he went without satisfaction (he had his first problem with the Chungs back in 2002). That adds up to $64.8 million.
Here are some other parts of his claim:
$500,000 for emotional damages
$542,000 for legal fees (Pearson is representing himself; his hourly rate would be betwen $390 and $425 per hour)Pearson said he is pressing on with his suit to defend all D.C. residents against poor business practices.
Just because they lost a pair of pants. You know, I am the first to admit I make mistakes. But how could the justice system let something like this even get in the courtroom. Talk about a waste of money to the court system and especially the poor dry cleaners.
However, there is hope. The couple might be able to re-coupe their court costs which are close to $100,000. The Chungs still have the so called pair of pants that Mr. Pearson states that they are not his. I think they should put the pants on eBay and re-coupe their costs that way. I am sure they will get a nice chunk of cash for them. ![]()
