Last week I came across this great list Deborah Freeman came up with and posted on her blog, Debo Hobo dot com. It is a list of places to retire:

Panama - combines a low cost of living, near-perfect weather and one of the world’s best discount programs for retirees, the Panama’s pensionado program offers up to 50% off everything from public transport to movies, mortgage rates, doctor’s visits, electricity, restaurants and airfares.

Malta - permanent foreign residents can take advantage of a 15% income-tax rate, and nobody pays property taxes. The health care is excellent. And you’ll encounter no language difficulties because nearly everybody speaks English.

New Zealand - no capital-gains tax, low cost of living and incomparable scenery.

Uruguay - stunning beaches, quiet and peaceful with a European feel.

Mexico - good weather, moderate prices, close to US, Internet widely available semi-retired can continue working on the beach. Good Health care.

France - You must apply for a long-term visa at the nearest French consulate in your home country, after which you would obtain a carte de séjour visiteur. Opt for the French country-side as opposed to the city as Paris is the most expensive city in France.

Romania - natural spas, spectacular mountains and pristine beaches. Health care is free; salaries, drugs and medical equipment are government-financed.

Argentina - cost of living is extremely low, and economy is improving. Home of Buenos Aires culture, art and museums and beautiful countryside.

Malaysia - quality health care; inexpensive seafood and cheap spa pampering; and activities such as sailing, snorkeling, diving, fishing, golf and island hopping.

Ecuador - affordable recovering for economic dormancy however on the verge of renewal

This information is very useful for when I achieve my goal of early retirement.

Imagine living off the shores of Panama. Or living in New Zealand and the hardest decision you have to make is to either hike, bike, surf or just relax. Absorb the culture of Argentina. Or help a small village become a stronger community in Ecuador. The world is our oyster. Being able to enjoy it is the biggest trick.

Personally, I think I would lean towards living in New Zealand. With English as the major language and scenery is comparable to Canada. Plus the cost of living is similar and I can still connect to the Internet to tell everyone how much I am enjoying retirement.
